Eternal Echoes Dedication

When I pick up a book, the first thing I read is the dedication and acknowledgments. I often wonder about the stories behind them. If you've read the Eternal Echoes dedication page, you'll know that it's dedicated to my brother and sister. I wanted to tell you why.

My brother and sister have Peters Anomaly Plus Syndrome. You can read more about it in this post. They were born blind, and had other developmental problems as well. They've fought against incredible odds for years, and thanks to the wonderful people who have helped them, and their optimism, they've thrived. Not only that, but their surgeries helped to pioneer treatments for other people born with Peters Anomaly and Peters Anomaly Plus. A huge part of the reason for their success is the tenacity and skills of the doctors at the Moran Eye Center.

The Moran Eye Center is the largest vision and research center in the Intermountain West. The doctors there, and at the University of Utah, literally gave my brother and sister eyesight when all other doctors told my parents to put my siblings in a hospital and wait for them to die. The doctors and staff are truly amazing people, committed to helping as many people as possible to receive sight and have a better life. They make sure that regardless of a person's problems, or their ability to pay, they can still receive treatment. They do medical missions outside of the United States, and Charitable Surgery Days at the hospital in Utah. My brother and sister have been recipients of the amazing talents and love of the Moran Eye Center doctors and staff.

It's always been a dream of mine to be able to pay forward the help and support my family received when my brother and sister were young. I thought it would be a nice tribute to include a note about the Moran Eye Center in the book dedicated to my brother and sister. So, that's the reason for the donation information below the dedication.

Thank you for all of your support of my books, and to the people who have been there for Colten and Natasha, you have my heart!

When Characters Make Mistakes

You know when you're watching a scary movie and the girl goes in search of the killer in the darkest room with no flashlight or cell phone, wearing the equivalent of a washcloth. As an audience member, you're screaming, "What are you doing??? Stop being an idiot!!! Get out of there!!! And put on some pants!"

I do this a lot.

There are usually more expletives.

But, as a writer, I get it. Take a minute and put yourself in that situation. If it was the middle of the night and you thought a killer was lurking in your house, do you take the time to put on clothes? Do you scramble in the dark looking for a cell phone and making noise that might alert the killer you're up and half naked? Do you turn on lights and give up the advantage of darkness?

I mention this, because the heroine in one of my books does something out of character. Really out of character. It bugged me when I was writing the scene and the character took me there. It bugged some of my betas. Then it bugged me even more.

I struggled with it to the point that I came up with 3 different ways to change it and drafted them.

Then I threw them all out.

Why? Because the other options were too convenient. While my mistake version seemed slightly out of character, the new options felt contrived. When I sat back and looked at them all, I decided to stick with my gut and let her do something wrong. I liked that it made my heroine a little more real, and that she has to do some introspection and admit she put others in danger because she was too confident. We all make mistakes. No one is perfect, and I don't think a book character should be either...well, maybe they should be perfect in some ways, like when it comes to a hot guy's abs and chest circumference...

But you get where I'm going with this. If a character is perfect, they aren't relatable. And who wants to read that?

As an author, especially when the book is in a series, one thing I really like seeing from my characters is their growth and the way they change. This character is a teenager. She's going through a crap ton of stuff that no person, let alone an 18 year old, should have to deal with. And up to this point, she's handled it like a champ. But, like most teenagers, she deserves to make a stupid choice here and there too, so when that's where she took me, I went there, and decided to stay.

There was a reason behind her decision and I like that it makes her a little more relatable. And, hey, she's wearing more than a washcloth when it happens, so while you might be screaming at me for a lot of other reasons, at least lack of proper clothing in cold weather won't be one of them. :)

Synopsis
A love so strong, even eternity can’t separate them. Evie Starling has lived a relatively uneventful life hanging out with friends, gossiping about boys, and driving her 1966 Mustang.

All of that changes when she moves to Gunnison, Colorado, to start college and meets two mysterious men. For centuries, Alex Night and Emil Stone have yearned for Evie but they each have their own reasons for wanting to be with her. When both men claim to be her soul mate and tell her about an unbelievable past, Evie learns that she s not the person she thought she was. Soon, Evie finds herself in the middle of an age-old battle between the Amaranthine Society the soul protectors, and the Daevos Resistance the soul destroyers. With a past she doesn t understand, and a future rife with danger, Evie has to decide who she can trust. But Alex and Emil aren t the only ones who want Evie, and her soul is about to become the rope in an eternal tug-of-war.

Angela Corbett

As a child, Angela Corbett’s most prized possession was a set of read-along books. She used to follow along with the narrator on the stereo and dream of when she would be able to read by herself. Her childhood reading habit led her to consider her future career. However, after consulting with her parents, she realized she had already exceeded hobbit height and since fairies and dragonslayers were tricky jobs to get, she decided she wanted to create worlds of her own. She started writing poetry in elementary school and worked as a journalist in high school and college, but could never leave her love for writing fiction behind.

She is a graduate of Westminster College where she double majored in communication and sociology. She has worked as a journalist, freelance writer, and director of communications and marketing. She loves classic cars, traveling, and escaping in a good book. She lives in Utah with her incredibly supportive husband and their five-pound Pomeranian, Pippin, whose following of fangirls could rival Justin Bieber’s.

Eternal Starling is the first book in the Emblem of Eternity trilogy.

Real Places and Things from The Devil Drinks Coffee!

When I wrote The Devil Drinks Coffee, I tried to make it recognizable for any small town, but particularly, small towns in Utah.

That said, there were a few things I took from my own small town Utah experience growing up. I based some things in the book on those experiences. I thought you might want to see what they are...and I even took pictures!

In The Devil Drinks Coffee, there's an old sheet metal plant that's often vandalized with Welcome Home messages to Mormon missionaries. Near the town I grew up, there's an old cement factory that's used for the same purposes. Though I never painted the cement factory (my dad threatened to let me sit in jail all night if I was caught), I had many friends who did.

Kate says one of her main reasons for moving back to Branson Falls is the doughnuts from the local bakery. These are the doughnuts they're based on, though they're actually from a grocery store. In fact, one of my beta readers who also grew up in my hometown read the description in Devil and knew exactly which doughnuts I was talking about! They're fantastic!

Kate also loves the gooey, cheesy, breadsticks from Sticks and Pie. These are the real breadsticks, and they're AMAZING!!!

Chelsea's body is found at Emerald Lake. The layout of the park is based on a park in my hometown, though the real park is next to a river, not a lake. I used to go there a lot during high school to read and write. I loved sitting at the tables next to the river, and thinking about my next story.

Kate's mom makes funeral potatoes for the Bradford family after Chelsea's death. Though funeral potatoes come with a wide variety of toppings including potato chips, cheese, bread crumbs, cornflakes, and even other cereal, Sophie Saxee makes hers topped with Cheetos. My mom was nice enough to concoct a recipe for me, and even bake it for Sunday dinner. Everyone who tasted her recipe loved it. She told me I could include the recipe below. Though, if you try it, be warned: it's a heart attack in a casserole dish. I have yet to attempt it.

Heart Stopping Cheetos Funeral Potatoes

1    pound of bacon, cut in small pieces
2    stalks celery chopped small
8    cups fresh potatoes, boil them, cool and shred them*
4    large green onions, chopped
¾   teaspoon seasoning salt
¼+ teaspoon pepper
2    cups heavy whipping cream (No substitutes)
6-8 tablespoons real butter, cut into slices
1 1/2 cups crispy Cheetos, chopped
1-2 cups shredded sharp cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Peel, boil, cool, and shred potatoes.* Set the potatoes to the side.

Cut bacon into small slices and then fry bacon in pan until almost crisp and add celery. Cook celery with bacon until bacon is crisp. Pour off grease.

Put shredded potatoes, green onions, celery and seasonings in large bowl. Add bacon and celery mixture. Add cream and gently mix until evenly distributed.

Carefully pour potato mixture in 9x13 glass pan and place butter slices on top. Put tin foil over glass pan.

Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. While baking, finely chop the Cheetos into small pieces. You should have approximately 1-1 ½ cups of chopped Cheetos to put on top of the taters. Shred the sharp cheese. Set the Cheetos and cheese to the side.

When taters have cooked for 45 minutes, open oven and take off the tinfoil. Cover taters with shredded cheese and then sprinkle chopped Cheetos® over the top.  Bake for an additional 15 minutes or until cheese is melted.

10 Things...

This is a blog tour post from The Devil Drinks Coffee that actually didn't get posted. But, I like it a lot so I decided to post it here!

Top 10 Things You'd Change About High School if You Could Go Back in Time

1.      I would have used less hairspray. Much. Less.
2.      Bought a ceramic flat iron to tame my curly hair at a much younger age.
3.      Doc Martens would not have been the only brand of shoes in my closet.
4.      Under no circumstances would I have let my mom convince me to wear the bunny costume in the town parade.
5.      Invested in mascara that didn’t make my eyelashes look like spider legs.
6.      Learned a foreign language so my foreign language requirement class in college would have been much easier.
7.      Warned my dates I was a vegetarian before they cooked steak/burgers/hot dogs for dinner.
8.      I would not have let my teachers convince me to attempt a ventriloquism act during the annual talent show.
9.      Would have learned how to find figure flattering jeans at an earlier age.
10.  Considering how much oil my classic Mustang went through, I would have purchased stock in oil companies.

Book Blast! The Devil Drinks Coffee!

Welcome to the Book Blast for The Devil Drinks Coffee!!!

The Devil Drinks Coffee Summary
By Angela Corbett, writing as Destiny Ford

A cow suicide, a revolving door rescue, and the birth of a bright purple pig are starting to make Kate Saxee wonder if taking a job in her small hometown of Branson Falls, Utah, was such a great idea. As The Branson Tribune editor, Kate covers local news, which, more often than not, involves her accident-prone mom. Nothing truly newsworthy has ever happened in the quiet town until local teen Chelsea Bradford turns up dead in a Branson Falls lake.

The police rule Chelsea’s death an accident, but Kate suspects there’s more to the story—and she’s not the only one. Two of Branson’s most eligible bachelors are determined to help her solve the crime—among other things. But the small town social network is faster than Twitter, and gossip about Kate’s love-life is quickly branding her the Branson Falls hussy.

As Kate learns more about Chelsea, she discovers that plenty of people are trying to cover up the real story behind the girl’s death—including Chelsea’s parents. Now Kate has to juggle work, men, her mom’s most recent disaster involving a low-speed John Deere Combine chase on the freeway, and fend off the Mormons heaven-bent on saving her soul—all while solving Chelsea’s murder. Dealing with this is going to require a lot of coffee, chocolate frosted donuts, Neil Diamond’s greatest hits, and a slew of words not on the town approved imitation swear list.

The Devil Drinks Coffee is on sale for .99 cents from July 1-3! Grab it while it's on sale!

About the Book

A little lie can change the course of everything. . .

Like every other eighteen-year-old in love, Olivia has dreams of spending forever with the love of her life. Luke is all she’s ever wanted – until she overhears something she was never meant to. In a matter of seconds, Olivia’s heart is shattered. Olivia handles it the only way she knows how - she runs- leaving behind her family, friends and the boy she loves.

Seeking comfort and an escape, Olivia finds it in resident bad boy Deacon. He’s everything Luke isn’t – and that’s fine with Olivia.

Now, seven years later, Olivia is older, wiser and headed back to Chicago looking forward to a fresh start and reconnecting with her best friend Pyper. What she doesn’t expect, is to come face to face with the boy she left behind and discover that even though she may have left, her feelings for him didn’t.

Can Olivia put aside the pain in her heart and trust Luke? Will the ties to her past ever let her go, or will she continue to let her life be affected by pretty little lies?

My Review

Coming off a really bad relationship (seriously, her ex-husband is a jerk of EPIC proportions), Olivia moves home and in with her best friend Pyper. Pyper insists Olivia get back into the dating world and Olivia finally relents. She has a string of horrific/hilarious dates before she runs into Luke, the man she once thought was the love of her life. He hasn’t seen Olivia in years, and the time has only made his feelings for her stronger. Scarred from her past, Olivia is hesitant to let her emotions take hold. But Luke isn’t afraid of her habit to run, and he’s determined to prove that she should give him another chance.

Okay, first, I have to say I loved, loved, loved the romance in this book. It was the perfect story of true love and second chances. Olivia was a great character, and I enjoyed watching her grow and change throughout the book. And then there’s Luke. Sheesh. Make sure you have the air conditioner set on high when you’re reading this! He’s absolutely swoon-worthy and my new book boyfriend. Honestly. He knows what he wants, and he’s not afraid to fight for it, even if there are no guarantees.

Another one of my favorite things about this book is the fashion tips at the beginning of each chapter. They’re all so true, and a lot of them are hilarious! My favorite was:  “If you’re riding a magic carpet with a guy who’s named Aladdin and a monkey named Abu, then I can see why you may have a need for harem pants. Otherwise, unless you are a washed out rapper, or a genie in a bottle, I would recommend staying away from this horrid fashion trend!”

Pretty Little Lies is funny, sexy, romantic and fun. It’s the perfect summer read! Fans of New Adult and Adult books will love the first book in this series, and you’ll be filling Jennifer Miller’s Facebook Wall asking for the next, trust me!
*Pretty Little Lies has mature content.

Pretty Little Lies Blog Tour! Guest Post from Jennifer Miller!

I'm so excited to be part of the blog tour for Pretty Little Lies, hosted by the fabulous Katie at Mundie Moms

Fashion in Pretty Little Lies

Olivia, the main character in Pretty Little Lies is a journalist, a fashion journalist that is.  During one of her college courses, she and her peers were given an assignment by their professor to start a blog.  The blog could be about anything they chose, as long as they wrote something a few times each week.  It was to be used as a creative outlet, and to give them a writing platform.  Olivia decided to combine her love of fashion and writing.  This is how her blog, ‘Pink Sugar Couture’ came to be.

What makes Olivia so unique is the fact that she finds beauty in everything.  It could be a rich wood used to make a bookshelf that draws her attention, or she may notice how perfect a throw pillow is that manages to tie a whole room together.  These descriptions are prominent throughout the novel, giving you an inside look at Olivia’s personality.

Shockingly, Olivia’s blog took off and she quickly gained thousands of followers.  Given her audience, it wasn’t long before word spread and major fashion magazines and fellow fashion bloggers began to take notice.  Olivia is bold and doesn’t mix words about how some fashion trends just don’t work.  She also uses her blog as a way to educate women about the key pieces of clothing everyone should own.

Olivia’s fashion tips are fun and relatable, which is why one appears at the beginning of each chapter in Pretty Little Lies!    Here’s a sample….

“Fashion tip: Crocs, anything requiring batteries, trucker hats, leggings being worn as pants and too short jorts are a few things that you should treat like a fashion virus. Just say no!”

Tell me, what is a fashion tip or beauty tip that you would like to contribute to Olivia’s blog?  How about a fashion faux pas that you made?  Or do you have a fashion item you can’t live without?  Tell me about it!

Ever since winning a writing contest at the young age of nine, when she wrote a book about a girl with a pet unicorn, she’s dreamed of writing a book of her own. Quickly learning that dreams don’t just fall into your lap, she knew she had to chase them herself and not be afraid to dream a little bigger. Most importantly, she is a wife and mother, and is very lucky to have a family that loves and supports her in all things. She also has an unhealthy addiction to handbags and chocolate covered strawberries, neither of which she cares to change.
