Fashion in Pretty Little Lies

Olivia, the main character in Pretty Little Lies is a journalist, a fashion journalist that is.  During one of her college courses, she and her peers were given an assignment by their professor to start a blog.  The blog could be about anything they chose, as long as they wrote something a few times each week.  It was to be used as a creative outlet, and to give them a writing platform.  Olivia decided to combine her love of fashion and writing.  This is how her blog, ‘Pink Sugar Couture’ came to be.

What makes Olivia so unique is the fact that she finds beauty in everything.  It could be a rich wood used to make a bookshelf that draws her attention, or she may notice how perfect a throw pillow is that manages to tie a whole room together.  These descriptions are prominent throughout the novel, giving you an inside look at Olivia’s personality.

Shockingly, Olivia’s blog took off and she quickly gained thousands of followers.  Given her audience, it wasn’t long before word spread and major fashion magazines and fellow fashion bloggers began to take notice.  Olivia is bold and doesn’t mix words about how some fashion trends just don’t work.  She also uses her blog as a way to educate women about the key pieces of clothing everyone should own.

Olivia’s fashion tips are fun and relatable, which is why one appears at the beginning of each chapter in Pretty Little Lies!    Here’s a sample….

“Fashion tip: Crocs, anything requiring batteries, trucker hats, leggings being worn as pants and too short jorts are a few things that you should treat like a fashion virus. Just say no!”

Tell me, what is a fashion tip or beauty tip that you would like to contribute to Olivia’s blog?  How about a fashion faux pas that you made?  Or do you have a fashion item you can’t live without?  Tell me about it!

About the Book

A little lie can change the course of everything. . .

Like every other eighteen-year-old in love, Olivia has dreams of spending forever with the love of her life. Luke is all she’s ever wanted – until she overhears something she was never meant to. In a matter of seconds, Olivia’s heart is shattered. Olivia handles it the only way she knows how - she runs- leaving behind her family, friends and the boy she loves.

Seeking comfort and an escape, Olivia finds it in resident bad boy Deacon. He’s everything Luke isn’t – and that’s fine with Olivia.

Now, seven years later, Olivia is older, wiser and headed back to Chicago looking forward to a fresh start and reconnecting with her best friend Pyper. What she doesn’t expect, is to come face to face with the boy she left behind and discover that even though she may have left, her feelings for him didn’t.

Can Olivia put aside the pain in her heart and trust Luke? Will the ties to her past ever let her go, or will she continue to let her life be affected by pretty little lies?

About The Fabulous Author

Author Jennifer Miller was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, but now calls Arizona home. Jennifer’s love of reading began when she was a small child, and only continued to grow as she entered adulthood. Ever since winning a writing contest at the young age of nine, when she wrote a book about a girl with a pet unicorn, she’s dreamed of writing a book of her own. Quickly learning that dreams don’t just fall into your lap, she knew she had to chase them herself and not be afraid to dream a little bigger. Most importantly, she is a wife and mother, and is very lucky to have a family that loves and supports her in all things. She also has an unhealthy addiction to handbags and chocolate covered strawberries, neither of which she cares to change. The Power of Hope

My favorite book series of all time is the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. (Side note: it's definitely for mature readers. If you're offended by swearing and sex, it's not for you.) There are so many fabulous things about the books (like Mac's character arc, sexy cars, and the most alpha of all alpha males, Barrons), but there's one important driving theme throughout the series.

"Hope strengthens, fear kills."

Ever since I first read the series, this has been my mantra. Seriously. I even have it printed on a shirt.

When I find myself getting in a rut about something, I think of Barrons telling Mac, "There are really only two positions one can take toward anything in life: hope or fear. Hope strengthens, fear kills."

I wrote The Devil Drinks Coffee in 2010. I loved the book and it's still my favorite thing I've ever written. I feel like I came a long way as a writer with Devil, and I truly believed readers would like it too. Hearing people in publishing tell me no one would want to read a story about a small Utah town was really hard, especially when the town, story, and characters were so close to my heart.

Taking a chance on publishing The Devil Drinks Coffee was pretty scary for me, and there were times when it was difficult to remember my mantra. I wasn't sure how the book would be received by family, friends, my YA readers, or readers in general. And I couldn't predict how the book would sell. Would people talk about the book and spread the word? Would they be excited about these new characters and want to read more? I had no idea.

Luckily, I have some pretty amazing people in my life, like my wonderful husband and my friends and family who have kept me from losing all my hair as I've gone through this process.

But you--my fabulous readers and bloggers who I count as friends and wish I could meet for coffee on a weekly basis--have been absolutely wonderful!!!

Thank you so much to everyone who has bought The Devil Drinks Coffee so far, everyone who's read it, everyone who's emailed me, tweeted, texted, told me their "Team," mentioned the book to friends, or reviewed it. Your enthusiasm for this book and the series has done more for me than you'll ever know and I'm so grateful to you!

You helped take away the fear, and you strengthened me.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you!!!

Love to you all!!!

The Problem with Love Squares

I admit it. I like Hart of Dixie. It's one of those shows I refuse to watch with my husband around because he can't go 30 seconds without mocking it. Honestly. He tried, and almost burst a blood vessel after 2 minutes. The show is silly, fun, and a guilty pleasure that usually doesn't require me to think or scream at my TV.

...until last night.

If you're a fan of the show and haven't seen the season 2 finale, stop reading now.

Seriously.

Stop.

Reading.

There will be spoilers.

You've been warned.

Before I get into that, I'll give you a little insider info. about The Devil Drinks Coffee. When I was going through revisions, I was working with a couple of literary agents. My main character, Kate, is single in the book. At that point in the revisions, I'd decided there was no reason for Kate to be stuck with just one or two love interests. Why not have 3 and instead of a love triangle, I could have a love square! I really liked the idea and the future series plot development surrounding it...and so did most of my betas when they were reading for me. But when the agents got a hold of the book, they both commented that my love square was one too many love interests. That the reader wouldn't know which guy to root for because they were being pulled in so many directions. Now don't get me wrong, there are books with love squares...there are books with love octagons...hello, Laurell K. Hamilton anyone??? But, I saw the agents' point of view, and made the changes. I think the book is stronger for it. What does this have to do with Hart of Dixie you ask?

Well, Zoe is now the corner of a love square. I'm not sure who to root for, and I'm actually kind of pissed because I've been waiting for Zoe and George to get a chance FOREVER! Now I'm left for 3 months wondering if she's going to pick one of the original love triangle members, or go with Jonah Breeland (who shall now be referred to as "New Yahoo"). I realize the intention was to show that Zoe picked herself over the two guys. I would have totally accepted and loved that plan, but then New Yahoo showed up, expressed interest in Zoe, and stalked her to her friend's wedding.

Sheesh.

If she ends up with New Yahoo, I will be displeased. Very, very displeased.

So, any Hart of Dixie fans out there? Are you Team Wade, George, or New Yahoo? And what did you think of the finale?
